The report starts the clock. The check says whether it worked.

You reported a pothole, so you know that road. A repair check is one photograph and four quick questions after it gets fixed.

Every check does two things. It tells your council whether its repairs are holding up, and it tells everyone else whether the roads where they live are getting better or worse. Nobody has ever asked this before. That is why nobody knows the answer.

Leave blank if you do not have one; we will match by location.

A photograph without location metadata is recorded but not counted towards published figures. Use your phone camera with location enabled for the best result.

Required. A check submitted without location is recorded but not counted.

Level

Is the repair flush with the surrounding surface, with no dip and no raised edge?

Edges

Are the edges sealed, with no cracking or crumbling around the patch?

Water

Does water drain away, or does it pool in the repair?

Condition

Does the surface look sound, or is it already breaking up, loose or soft?

Not sure about one of them? Say so. "Not sure" is a real answer and it still counts.

Photo required. Location required. All four questions required.

A repair that lasts two winters was done properly. One that fails in six months wasn't.

Most reporting stops at the report. Nobody goes back to look, so nobody finds out whether the money spent on the roads did any good.

A failed repair is the same pothole coming back, and it means the council paid twice for the same stretch of road.

The pattern only appears when people who use the road take a second look. One area with repairs holding up. Another with fresh patches failing within a year. Neither a council nor a contractor can see that on its own.

The pattern is public. Nobody gets named.

We publish the location, the authority, the date, the photographs and the result. Every check sits next to the original report, permanently.

We do not publish accusations about named contractors. A repair that has failed is not a public accusation. It is a data point, and it goes to the council that commissioned the work, privately, with the photograph attached.

Once a month, two figures per authority:

  • Time to fix. How many reports were made safe inside the 28-day deadline.
  • Repair quality. How many checked repairs were graded good or acceptable.

Both are published with the method, and the method page is linked from every figure.

If you did good work, show it.

We welcome site photographs from the firms doing the repairs. The rules are short, and we keep to them.

  • Labelled. Your submission is labelled as yours. We name you. We just do not pretend it is not yours.
  • Tied to a real report. It links to a report with a location and a date. No loose before-and-afters.
  • Independent figures. Your photographs are shown in the record. The repair quality figure comes only from independent resident checks.
  • Council named alongside. The authority that commissioned the work is named alongside you.

A record of what your repairs did next.

Every maintenance contract carries a defect rectification period. If a patch fails inside it, the work is normally the contractor's to redo at no cost to you. Finding those failures is the hard part, and it is why so much money already budgeted for rectification goes unclaimed.

Repair checks give you that record by location, with photographs and dates, across the network rather than from a sample of it.
